In May, APAH and Fairfax County announced a $55 million commitment from the Amazon Housing Equity Fund to develop more than 500 new affordable homes in Tysons, located in Fairfax County.

The Dominion Square project started as a partnership between the Fairfax County Redevelopment Housing Authority (FCRHA) and APAH with the goal of delivering affordable housing in the Tysons area. In spring 2021, APAH contracted for the acquisition of a 2-acre parking lot of a car dealership. At closing, Fairfax County will own the land and will enter into a long-term ground lease to APAH.

Dominion Square is the first 100% affordable housing multifamily development in Tysons, providing 500+ units affordable to households earning 60% of the area median income (AMI) or less.

The project was originally intended to be developed in two phases. However, the award of $55M from the Amazon Housing Equity Fund will allow APAH to expedite the process and develop both phases at once. This means that all 500+ units will be delivered by 2026. In addition, the project will include a 30,000 SF community center operated by Fairfax County Neighborhood Community Services.

At the Dominion Square press conference where the funding was announced, Brian Stout, Senior Manager of Public Policy for Amazon stated, “we want to create the types of communities where everyone has opportunity. [Dominion Square] is truly a unique project.” Following, Carmen Romero, APAH President and CEO noted, “the significant infusion of development capital from the Amazon Housing Equity Fund enables us to accelerate construction of a second building to the south of our initially designed structure, bringing Dominion Square to more residents in the heart of Tysons. Between the resident services we will provide, WMATA’s presence at Spring Hill Metro, and the best-in-class amenities and jobs Tysons is known for, we believe this development will be a welcomed asset to this community.”
