Arlington, VA (December 12, 2015) – Today the Arlington County Board unanimously approved the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing’s (APAH) request to move forward with Gilliam Place, a new project that would provide 173 net new committed affordable residential apartments as well as approximately 8,950 square feet of ground floor retail and civic space. Today’s County Board action authorizes the necessary Use Permit, Rezoning and Affordable Housing Investment Fund (AHIF) allocation to move forward with the project on the site of Arlington Presbyterian Church in Columbia Pike’s Town Center.
APAH began its work with Arlington Presbyterian Church in 2012 at the invitation of the church. “The congregation of Arlington Presbyterian Church is excited to see our vision for the future of our church property move one step closer to realization,” noted Reverend Sharon Core, pastor of Arlington Presbyterian Church. “In providing affordable housing as well as civic space to help make Arlington welcoming and inclusive to all, Gilliam Place will put our faith into action. We have persevered together on this long journey of discernment and are grateful to the County Board and to APAH, our development partner, for helping us reach this milestone.”
Gilliam Place will provide extensive resident services and feature 17 barrier-free units, in a new construction building designed to Earthcraft Platinum standards for environmental efficiency and sustainability. The project will market to low income individuals, active seniors and families and is envisioned as an intergenerational community. “We are grateful to the County Board for today’s vote of support for Gilliam Place,” said Nina Janopaul, APAH’s President and CEO, “and are honored that Arlington Presbyterian Church selected APAH as their partner for this extraordinary project. Today’s action helps move forward this amazing congregation’s commitment to our community and Arlington County’s vision to meet the goals of the Affordable Housing Master Plan. “
In March 2016, APAH will apply for Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) allocated by the Virginia Housing Development Authority. If approved, construction will start in 2017, for delivery in late 2018.
