Age Boldly: The True Ground Model for Thriving Seniors

As we embrace the new year, our commitment to supporting older adults remains as strong as ever. True Ground has four age-restricted affordable housing communities, with a fifth under construction that will open later this year. Each of these communities, located throughout Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia and Washington, DC, has its own distinctive identity – reflecting the unique backgrounds and experiences of the neighbors who call them home.

At True Ground, housing is just the beginning – we provide onsite resident services to create a trusted safety net, supporting neighbors as they age in place with dignity and independence. Across our portfolio, there’s a variety of programs designed to foster health, wellness, and wellbeing, ensuring every resident feels empowered to pursue their best life.

So, what did January look like? Discover these vibrant communities and how our neighbors stay active.

Loudoun County, Virginia

Shortly after Loudoun View Senior Residences opened in 2022, we partnered with Loudoun Hunger Relief (LHR) to bring onsite food distributions to the community twice monthly. Early on, True Ground learned more residents are interested in a vegetarian lifestyle and coordinated with LHR to provide more meatless options. Additionally, through a medical grant with 100 Women Strong, True Ground is providing residents with specialized walkers with enhanced mobility. These walkers are already making a meaningful difference, with sizes designed to fit people of various heights and thoughtful features like arm supports to help those who find bending down challenging.

Fairfax County, Virginia

Located just a half mile from the Van Dorn Metro station, Oakwood Meadow Senior Residences, True Ground’s largest senior community, provides 150 affordable homes. Through our partnership with Fairfax County Neighborhood Community Services, AARP kicked off 2026 with information sessions about fraud prevention and the Virginia GrandDriver program, which promotes driving safety. AARP also launched an eight‑week program to help participants better understand and manage chronic pain.

At Ilda’s Overlook Senior Residences, a strong sense of community and social connection flourishes. In addition to True Ground’s program calendar, residents have taken initiative by creating their own Resident Activity Calendar, featuring a monthly book club, a tri-weekly exercise group, and weekend gatherings such as group lunches, movie screenings, and arts and crafts sessions.
A typical January weekday showcases this sprightly spirit. The morning began with a resident-led yoga class, where a dedicated 99-year-old participant proves that staying active has no age limit. Following yoga, CARE Mobile partnered with George Mason University volunteers to provide one-on-one tech tutoring for residents. At lunchtime, the community came together for a special MLK Day bingo session with prizes hosted by CARE Mobile, complete with a delicious meal and dessert from True Ground. The day wrapped up with a movie in the community room, giving residents another chance to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

To help older adults access transportation, True Ground provides shuttle service at both Ilda’s Overlook and Oakwood Meadow. Regular destinations include The People’s Pantry, located in True Ground’s main office in Arlington, and trips to grocery stores, big-box stores such as Target, the Post Office, and other community events.

Washington, DC

At Riggs Crossing Senior Residences, a new partnership with SWAT Fitness, an organization that provides inclusive fitness and wellness programs for individuals living with disabilities, is supporting residents’ mobility and overall well‑being in 2026. Classes alternate between traditional yoga and chair yoga, and SWAT Fitness coaches offer one‑on‑one guidance to ensure each participant leaves with exercises tailored to their needs. By the second week, one resident shared that they already felt improvements in everyday tasks thanks to increased mobility. Listening to resident feedback, SWAT Fitness is developing at‑home video sessions so participants can continue their routines between classes. Here’s to encouraging and empowering fitness journeys in the new year.

These community-specific initiatives are more than just activities—they’re gateways to renewed energy, personal growth, and lasting friendships. By focusing on holistic health and the excitement of new beginnings, we’re ensuring that every older adult in our communities can embrace 2026 with confidence and joy. We invite everyone to join us  this year as we celebrate wellness, connection, and positive change.
