35 for 35: Celebrating True Ground Residents with a Quinceañera
True Ground creates meaningful programs that celebrate residents and a standout this year was a quinceañera for nine young women, held during Hispanic Heritage Month. A quinceañera is a traditional celebration in Latin American cultures for a girl’s 15th birthday, marking the transition from girlhood into womanhood. Notable festivities include ball-gown style dresses, dances, and a “changing of the shoes” ceremony to mark the transition.
True Ground’s Resident Services Coordinators (RSC) are key to providing services and programs for residents, often learning of resident needs through one-on-one conversations. RSC Anthony Linares led planning efforts for this milestone celebration after learning several families were interested in a quince but deterred by associated costs and time spent planning the traditionally elaborate event. The celebration was open to families from all backgrounds and True Ground promoted the quince across the portfolio to garner additional interest. While a quince is commonly held for one person, this joint celebration provided an opportunity to build community and social capital.
Anthony worked with families throughout the year to ensure the quince incorporated all aspects that were important to them, organizing parent meetings, dance and etiquette classes, dress donations, and professional portraits of each girl to be displayed at the event.
Hosted in a stunning ballroom, the event featured all the hallmarks of this beloved tradition, with families and friends gathering to celebrate the coming of age of these young women. Beyond the festivities, this event was about more than just celebrating a milestone; it reflected our commitment to honoring the diverse cultures of True Ground residents and building a true sense of community.
A special thanks to our partners and volunteers who made this event a success.
